Why MobileNuclear is Joining ISIT

Mission

MobileNuclear Energy LLC was formed in 2022 to accelerate development and deployment of a mobile advanced nuclear reactor for the expeditionary energy market as quickly and widely as possible. This goal aligns with ISIT mission of bringing advanced technologies to market.

About ISIT

MISSION: The Institute for Strategic and Innovative Technologies (ISIT), a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable research institute, provides a forum for international cooperation, research, and scientific exchange for advanced nuclear and electromagnetic technologies to address critical global technical challenges.

APPROACH: The Institute provides facilities and internationally recognized experts to host and lead research and exploration to address selected scientific, technological, and national security challenges of global importance. Through team formation with government, national laboratories, universities, and industry – including leading scientists, engineers, and national security specialists – focus on collaboration, coordination and communication.

Mobile Nuclear Reactors Under Development

Project Pele

The Defense Department’s Strategic Capabilities Office has funded a “transportable” microreactor that can be shipped in standard containers, set up in three days, operated for weeks or months, left to cool for seven days, and then shipped out again. Contractor is BWX Technologies. A prototype of Project Pele will be
delivered to INL in 2024, according to BWXT.

The DOD’s Microreactor Program

The 2019 National Defense Authorization Act funded a microreactor project. In August 2023, the U.S. Air Force finally announced an “intent to award” a contract to Oklo of Santa Clara, CA. However, in November 2023, it reversed that, leaving the project
in limbo for now.

eVinci

SaskPower of Saskatchewan, Canada, is funding Westinghouse to build its first eVinci microreactor. It will be factory assembled and shipped via truck and produce either 5 MW of electricity or 13 MW of high-temperature steam. In addition, Oct. 23, 2023, the DOE’s National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) awarded Westinghouse $3.9 million for eVinci development.

PYLON

Ultra Safe Nuclear of Seattle, Washington advertises its PYLON design as transportable even into outer space, and on Earth, transportable by road, rail, sea, or air. It is designed to provide 1.5MWe-5MWe for up to three years. Oct. 23, 2023, the DOE’s National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) awarded Ultra Safe Nuclear $3.9 million
to further develop PYLON.
